Information on Siteki, Swaziland, Africa
Siteki is the Administrative Capital of the Lebombo Area, and lies in the heart of rural Swaziland. It is situated about thirty kilometers to the south of Mlawula Nature Reserve and about a two hour drive from the capital of Mbabane. The name of the town originates from the Swazi word meaning "marrying place" and is named as such because Mbandzeni, great grandfather of the present king, gave his troops permission to perform marriage ceremonies there. The town was once popular with renegades, highwaymen and frontier troops and the legacy of this is still conspicuous in the atmosphere.
Siteki is well known for its Inyanga and Sangoma School which trains healers and diviners, and is a government managed facility. The Muti-Muti Nature Reserve, not far from Siteki, is the area in which the practitioners collect the variety of herbs they use in their traditional medicine practices. If you make arrangements prior to the visit, you can actually have a reading with one of the Sangomas.
Visitors can make a stop at the colourful market and shop where they will find a wide range of traditional Swazi curios. The main street is also the location of many interesting and lively restaurants. Siteki has the oldest Hotel in the kingdom which has recently undergone a complete refurbishment. It proves to be an ideal night stop travellers, making their way from Kwazulu Natal to northern Mozambique. It is a location that travelers can make an early start to their journey, and get through the Mhlumeni/Goba border post as it opens.
Muti-Muti Nature Reserve is a birdwatchers paradise boasting variety of different habitats. The reserve is host to moist belt forests, Kiaat woodlands, rocky plateau and cliffs and open savannah. An impressive variety of over 250 bird species have been identified in the reserve. On a clear day one can see across the entire breadth of Swaziland in the West, and across the floodplains of Mozambique situated in the East.
